News
Here you can find some recent updates about our research, our members and other news from our group.
12/11/24 Our group will move to ISTA in 2025.
Big news! Our group will be moving to the Instite of Science and Technology Austria right outside of Vienna in Klosterneuburg.
Check out artcile from ISTA about Julian's arrival interview with Julian about the central role of quantum mechanics in nature, how ultracold temperatures magnify atomic interactions, and what this has to do with board games.
We are excited for this new chapter in our group's young history!
24/10/24 Benjamin joins the group as a project student.
We are delighted to welcome Benjamin Czasch to our group. He joins the Cavity Lab as a project student and where he will work on characterizing our cavity lock.
Learn more about the Cavity Lab here.
21/10/24 Johannes joins the group as a Master student.
We are delighted to welcome Johannes Berger to our group. He joins the Fiber Lab as a Master student and where he will work on manufacturing our Fiber Fabry-Perot Cavities.
Learn more about the Fiber Lab here.
2/10/24 Tweezer array in the Cavity lab
Major Milestone for the Cavity Lab! They managed to trap single atoms in tweezers and generate tweezer arrays.
Tweezer arrays are a key component of the experiment we are building the Cavity lab. The goal is to couple an array of tweezer-trapped atoms to a high-finesse Fabry-Perot Fiber Cavity to create a flexible quantum processor with programmable, non-local interactions.

20/09/24 Group hike to Ennser Hütte and Almkogel.
For this years group hike we went to the lovely Ennser Hütte in Großramming in the state of Upper Austria.
Heavy rain and cold temperatures in the week before meant there was almost half a meter of snow near the summit, which made for an adventourus trip and gave the opportunity to practice snowball throwing for the winter. The hike was rounded off by a journal club as well as drinks and games in the evening.
23/08/24 We place 3rd at the annual ATI cooking competition.
After a very closely fought competition, our group's team "Peach Perfect" placed third in the annual institute cooking competion. With an average score of 7.44/10 just shy of 1st and 2nd place which received a score of 7.89 and 7.65 respectively.
Our dishes were:
Starter: Peach, Honey and Feta Strudel by Stephan
Main: Cold Niku Dashi Ramen by Franz
Desert: Peach and Lavender tarte by Isa
Drink: Peach Bellini by Johannes
Thanks to everyone who helped out and made the event a lot of fun!
01/08/24 Michi joins the Cavity Team as Project Student
We are delighted to welcome Michael Stummer as a project student in our group. He will assist the Cavity Team by benchmarking performance parameters of our Microscope.
Learn more about the Cavity experiment here.
01/07/24 Rodrigo joins the Lithium Team as PostDoc
We are delighted to welcome Dr. Rodrigo Rosa-Medina as a postdoctoral researcher in our group. After completing his PhD at ETH Zurich under Tillman Esslinger, Rodrigo joins our Lithium experiment.
Learn more about Rodrigo here.
13/6/24: Constantin succesfully defends his Master Thesis
Congratulations to Constantin Grave, who was a project and master thesis student in our group from April 2023 to April 2024. He successfully defended his thesis, "Towards the fabrication of fiber-based Fabry-Perot cavities".
Read his thesis here.
31/5/24: Marvin leaves the group
After almost two years, we say goodbye to our PostDoc Dr. Marvin Holten. He will take on a position as Co-Founder and Lead Developer at Copenhagen-based startup DIASENSE. We thank Marvin very much for the great time and wish him all the best!
29/5/24: Lithium lab closes vacuum chamber
8 months after the start of the experiment, the Lithium lab has achieved an important milestone. They have closed vacuum chamber and achieved a pressure of < 2xE-11 mbar.
Next stop: Trapping atoms!

13/5/24: Franz starts his PhD
We are delighted to welcome Franz von Silva-Tarouca to our team. After completing his M.Sc. in Quantum Science and Technology at Technical University Munich and Ludwig-Maximilian-University of Munich, he will join the Cavity Lab as a new PhD student.
